Calgary Police Service v. Cst. Taufiq Shah
In a high-profile, high-stakes dispute pitting Chief Jack Beaton against whistleblower Constable Taufiq Shah, Michael Bates, joined by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Calgary Herald, succeeds in keeping police disciplinary proceedings open to public scrutiny.
In subsequent proceedings, Bates has all Police Act charges against his client dismissed, protecting Cst. Shah from the possibility of losing his career as a police officer.
The Calgary Police Service and Chief Beaton would later fail in an attempt to overturn the dismissal of charges and would be forced to allow Cst. Shah to return to active duty.
